Every year, the vast savannahs of Tanzania come alive with one of the most extraordinary natural spectacles on Earth: the Great Wildebeest Migration. The Great Wildebeest Migration is a year-round movement of wildebeest and other herbivores across the Serengeti in Tanzania and the Maasai Mara in Kenya. The migration follows a natural clockwise pattern, where the herds are constantly on the move in search of fresh grass and water. The journey spans nearly 1,000 kilometers and is fraught with natural obstacles, including predator-packed plains and crocodile-infested rivers. Yet it is in this very struggle that the migration becomes so unforgettable.
Unlike popular belief, the migration is not a single event but an ongoing movement. Tanzania plays host to more than 80% of this great journey, especially within Serengeti National Park, which offers year-round opportunities to see the herds at different stages of their migration.
The beauty of the Serengeti Great Migration is that there’s something to witness at almost every time of year. From December to March, the herds gather in the southern Serengeti and the Ndutu plains, where calving season takes place. Here, around half a million baby wildebeest are born within just a few weeks. This attracts predators like lions, leopards, and hyenas, making it a dramatic and photogenic time to visit.
Between May and June, the wildebeest start moving northwest through the central and western Serengeti, heading toward the Grumeti River. During June and July, this is where you can witness one of the most thrilling parts of the journey—river crossings, where the herds face crocodiles in the murky waters.
From July to October, the herds move further north to the Mara River near Kogatende and Lamai. The Mara River crossings are the most iconic scenes of the migration—chaotic, dangerous, and unforgettable. Then, from November, the herds begin to move south again to complete the cycle.
Tanzania offers a variety of stunning locations to witness the migration at different stages. The Ndutu region, located in the southern Serengeti and Ngorongoro Conservation Area, is perfect for seeing the calving season. Central Serengeti, particularly around Seronera, offers consistent game viewing year-round with plenty of predators.
In the western corridor, the Grumeti region provides an excellent chance to see river crossings during May and June. Further north, Kogatende and Lamai are best for catching the thrilling Mara River crossings from July through October. Each location offers a unique perspective and contributes to the richness of the wildebeest migration safari experience.
